One is a fixed width centred style (765 pixels) to allow the page to be viewed at a resolution of 800 x 600 with no horizontal scrolling. If you decide to use something like this design and the majority of your visitors are using 1024 x 768 the width of the page can be increased to 995 pixels and all the columns adjusted to suit.
The second is a 5 column fluid layout (Yes, Yes, Why on earth would anybody ... etc) but as said before this is not about definitive styles and design. The idea is just getting you to think "outside the box" a little. With CSS just about anything is possible with a little thought.
Even making your website look like a newspaper.
These layouts would be so easy to to set out using tables and that is really how it should be done. But in the interest of education and making a point it has been given a shot.
